Finishing Transom on '62 CC Constellation

Post by 62 Connie » Tue Feb 28, 2012 3:38 pm

New to CCABC! I am having the transom on my 1962, 36’ Connie replaced in its entirety due to dry rot – frames & planks, all Honduran Mahogany. Starting with new, unfinished wood, can anyone suggest the appropriate finishing procedure for both above and below the waterline to bring her back to original? Would a sanding sealer be applied before staining? What stain would be close to original? Top coat presumable would be one of the better varnishes or should I use something else?

Below the waterline is this best just left painted or would it make sense to seal with S1 before painting?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Above the waterline:
Stain with Interlux 573
Seal with 2 coats Smiths Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES)
8 coats of Varnish minimum (Epifanes and Captains are both good brands)after 1st 2 coats sand between coats with 220-320grit

Below the waterline:
Seal with 2 coats Smiths Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES)
4 Barrier Coats with Interlux 2000e
2 coats bottom paint
1935 Gar Wood 16-35
1929 Gar Wood 28-30

That sounds like a good plan....My way is..I would skip the Smith's...Stain, then Seal with Epifanes thinned to about 40%..and build 10-12 coats sanding in between coats to get it leveled out nice to show off some sweet goldleaf.

..at the waterline and below I would do just like Cenger suggested.

Both replys give excellent advice...as to the gold leaf and thinning the epi down without using the cpes as Ryan suggest....That is how I would approach it.

Hi Russ, welcome to Boat Buzz. Good to have you with us.

Chris-Craft probably built the transom entirely out of Philippine Mahogany. They didn't use much (if any) real mahogany on these. Honduras Mahogany is beautiful stuff and comes with a premium price tag. It would look great but wouldn't look original. You may want to look into using the Philippine Mahogany.

I have done this job and would use the CPES,if nowhere else than on the cut ends and the top edge of the planks. These areas are where the rot typically starts. If you use the Smiths over the stain make sure you let the stain dry and cure for a few days otherwise you'll be brushing off stain while brushing on CPES.

Great Advise... Look into Awlgrip 3131 varnish. You can do 4 to 5 coats in a day. build it up, then sand with 220 to just take the edges down, and Epafaine the last for a high gloss....

Thanks for all the advice.

Repairs are nearly complete. A few more coats of varnish, some gold leaf lettering and then remounting the swim grid.

Now for painting the rest of the hull!
