1949 CC 17' Deluxe Runabout pictures

Post by timtaylor » Wed Jun 27, 2012 9:55 am

I'm new to the club. I'm restoring a 1949 Chris Craft 17' Deluxe Runabout, hull no. R-17-1707. I'm looking for pictures and other information that would tell me what the original looked like so I can get the restoration right.
Are there pictures available here or elsewhere online (preferably color)? If so, please tell me how to find them.
Thanks.

You can look for pictures of that, or any model in the boat registry, but no guarantee on originality. You can also look for brochures and other marketing material in the club archives, and possibly Brass Bell articles with pictures.

Also, if you have not done so, contact the Mariners Museum and order your information packet. They will let you know what factory pictures and drawings they have available.

Tim;

Welcome aboard.

There is a ton of information about the post-war 17' Deluxe on this Boat Buzz.

A popular model and many are around. One of our Club Directors has one and also Pete Devito is very boned up on those as well.

Matt Fine is correct. First get your hull card and package from the MM and then start searching the Boat Buzz and archive (on the home page and you have to log in).

Best regards

Tim,
Welcome to the club! Tim Taylor the toolman?

I restored a 1948 17' Deluxe Runabout and it is a fun boat to own. Anything that I can help you with just let me know. I documented a lot on this boat and have photo's of most everything. There was an article last year in the Brass Bell that Al Benton did on the 17' Deluxe and the photo in the article was the boat I restored Knotty '48.
I will enclose a few photo's. The only real unoriginal item I will tell you is the cord I put vertically on the seatbacks.
Send me a private message on anything you need and again welcome aboard..
Pete

Great pic Tom!
Agreed. I have not seen that photo before. Check out those proud bungs on the aft port deck, mismatched bungs on both the hull and deck and the scruffy varnish. Its factory original!

I was thinking that model used putty and not bungs. Not sure now.

It was my understanding that the early boats with 3/8" planking had putty, later boats with 1/2" planking had bungs.

Man I just love seeing those old original photos from back in the day.

Probably enhanced by the fact that I just spent 5 days touring around Algonac...

first photo Look at the stern light.. looks like Prewar to me I can not see the bow section of this photo. The second photo is really neat because how many would stand for the pok a dot's down the side of their boat after they just spent all that time on the finish. That photo I would feel sure is original.

The poles seemed to interchange the first few years after the war. The Jacksonville photos we have from 1946-49 show the same thing on a Racing Runabout.

Tom,
That really was a good photo because that shows the plywood ceiling panels that everyone has questioned for a long time. My 48 had the plywood ceiling panels. Thanks for sending this photo out to us.

I have a 48 project boat which appears to be very original. I agree about the plywood ceiling panels as mine has the same with the same oval vent holes at the top. The photos also show the dark covering boards and the step plates breaking the Hydem with ferrules on the Hydem ends. Also interesting is that they appear to show a horizontal welting between the seat back facing and the top edge on both seats. I thought the facing wrapped aroud the top in one piece.
