Caulking ???

Post by teacher » Thu Jun 13, 2013 12:04 pm

Dragging the wife's newly inherited 1964 Super Sport back to North Carolina next week. Been in a heated garage the past 40+ years.
I'm guessing it'll need caulked so I need to find a shop near Raleigh that can accommodate this.
anyone know where I should take it.

Hi,
I don't think that I would caulk it. Doing so may do some real damage when she soaks up, buckled planks and such.
I would start by splashing a couple 5gal buckets every once in a while to soak her up. Don't put in too much water in at a time, it gets too heavy, your boat is designed to hold water out, not in.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

I thought I read somewhere that these boats needed caulking. I'm just going to have to find some one local to check it out and assist with the prep to launch.

An uneducated local will tell you that caulk will do the job, and to some extent it will. This is only a temporary 'fix' that will most likely do irreparable harm to your classic boat. Please do not destroy a classic because you arein a hurry to get into the water.

I'm in no hurry to splash her. It will be in top shape before it hits the water and I WILL find a local classic boat owner and have him give a thumbs up before I do anything to her. I got most of her uncovered yesterday and she is beautiful !!! The Internet is an invaluable source of info.
That said, I want to thank everyone that has shared and helped already and those that will do so going forward!!!

teacher:

Last week I had a friend tell me they had a Chris Craft in the back of a storage building that was partially redone and the owner may be selling it as is. To my delight I found a late '50s Capri in the back of the building. To my great dissapointment I found that the bottom has been fiberglassed. (about the worst thing you can do to a wood boat) When I asked my friend about the glass job he informed me that an "EXPERT" down the road, who does this all the time, did it. I got the guys name, so that I know who to stay away from.

I tell you this story to make you aware that local "EXPERTS" are not always that informed.

The guys on this forum have amazing knowledge and a real passion for wood boats.

Good Luck!
