speedometer

All,
The speedometer doesn't "come alive" until +30mph. What causes the "insensitivity" where it won't indicate lower speeds? Is there an installation issue? Is there a maintenance procedure that "clears" the system? Help.

Jerry,
Very common problem, make sure the pick-up has an unobstructed flow of water and is not picking up turbulence from anything on the bottom of the boat. Next make sure that the tube that runs from the pick-up to the gauge is as short as possible with long sweeping bends and no kinks. How old is the gauge? I've found the turbulence issue is most common with gauge failure a close second but I did see one once where the tube that runs up to the gauge was kinked-off so it took a fair amount of speed to create enough pressure to push the water past the kink and make the gauge respond, it also read about 5 MPH after you were tied up at the dock.
Check that out and let me know.

kinds and bends

Craig,
Thanks. The first thing I'll check is kinks and large radius bends.
Should the gage be disconnected and then "back blow" to clear?!

I was going to suggest that but I figured "one step at a time". Yes definately disconnect the tube from the back of the gauge and blow compressed air through to make sure it's clear.
