New Engine arrival
Well work continues on the Commander project.
I have been cleaning and painting engine and transmission pieces and parts-where do they all come from?
New engine arrived yesterday from Center State Engines. Very helpful and friendly people, I've called them twice with a few questions and they are right there with a friendly answer.
Gaskets, oils, filters as well as the new carburetor and various sundries are on order, V-Drive parts and gaskets are here so that will be reassembled today.
Transmission will get torn down for parts assessment this weekend, those will get ordered on Monday.
I worry about the outlay of cash for this project but I'm getting excited to see the progress.
More soon...

Sadly like most things in boating, particularly antique boating you cannot think about costs and cost overruns in mid project or you'll stop all work and then what do you have?
It's a rare day when you can pour a ton of money into a restoration and still make a profit on it's eventual sale. I've only managed to do that once is seven boat transactions because I didn't over-restore it. I also got lucky in paying next to nothing for the boat in the first place.

Wow! That's a purdy nice looking engine you've got there. Can't wait to see it bolted onto those new stringers. Looking Good!

Re: New Engine arrival
Hi guys,
There is just something about brand new!
So where the project stands is;
All parts except transmission have been cleaned and painted.
Picked up all gaskets and other loose small parts yesterday. Carburetor will be here Friday.
I am replacing every fastener on the engine with new stainless steel, those will be here today.
Water pump parts are on order.
Transmission is torn down and it's immaculate inside! everything including the reverse band looks new so I am going to return the overhaul kit and get just the gasket/o-ring/seal kit instead. It gives me a warm and fuzzy having seen the internals, I now don't have to guess at the condition of the trans. and given the reputation these transmissions have I won't have to worry about walking home any time soon.
The remaining fiberglass repairs in the bilge have been on hold due to constant rain. More picture on the way.

I will be keeping an eye on this as I am in the market for a 350 long block for the Penn Yan that just cracked a head.

Re: New Engine arrival
Can't say enough good about Center State Engines in Florida.
Wendy over there is awesome! I've been calling and asking questions almost every day and not only does she not get irritated with the calls but she is an absolute encyclopedia, can't stump her with any question! Highly recommend them.
Michigan Motorz was a little less expensive on the left hand (automotive) rotation but Center state was less on the opposite rotation and they were less expensive on shipping. All in all they were very close in terms of price and I have no experience with customer service at Michigan but the customer service at Center State is phenomenal!
I don't know if you're looking for new or reman, they have both. I opted for brand right from the factory new. Price was not that different.
