Hot start issue

Post by Vic_Mel » Thu Aug 02, 2012 4:31 pm

The 327QA in my XK19 starts fine when cold. On restart with a warm motor, it cranks very slowly, if at all. After cooling for 15 minutes or so, it starts normal again. The original starter was rebuilt four years ago, the battery is new and fully charged. Both battery cable clamps are new. I've looked on some Chevy forums, and this seems to be a problem with GM small blocks. The recommended solutions are installing a heat shield, a starter relay, or a remote Ford solenoid. Has anyone had this problem and found a solution?

Have you checked out the coil?

I experienced similar symptoms once and the coil (and old plug wires) were the culprit.

I never thought to check the coil. Thanks!

My Q has always done this, I always wondered if it was the extra water in the exhaust from sitting with open exhaust tubes right at the water level. It has never not turned over, but turns over slowly at first. We'll see what this new motor does.

It's seems like every old GM I ever owned had this problem.

Here's a quick check for the starter: On a warm start, if it doesn't crank, tap pretty hard on the solenoid with a hammer while cranking the engine.

The best solution, although not original, is to get a high-torque NEW starter from the hot-rod shop. Summit Racing or Jeg's are good choices. Avoid a rebuild from the usual auto parts places.

You'll pay a couple of hundred bucks, but they come with much better construction and can withstand the heat-soak problem.

Only use a starter for marine use...you don't want to become a floating bomb.

My starter was freshly rebuilt from a very reputable shop and still has this problem. It has never not turned over, just a little slow when warm.

REPEATING...make sure it is a MARINE unit....do NOT be tempted to try some souped up non marine product.

Oops, good point guys.

I got to talking about chevy engines and heat-soak problems and forgot the boat part of the equation.

Better safe than sorry.

I've got a KLC, so I sent my starter off to Glenn Cheaney at ACE in Kansas. He expects it to last another 60 years. I believe it will.
