283 engine problems
i've recently rebuilt a 283 chevy engine for a 1968 corsair sea v inbord. problem is there is ALOT of smoke coming from the exhaust pipes and from the oil filler tube any suggestions on how to fix it?
Did they use Chrome piston rings?

I am afraid the fix is to pull it out and send it to the machine shop for test and rebuild...if it is as bad as you indicate. Jim asked a good question too....chrome rings?

Make sure you use break in oil for the first 20 hours or so. The rings will not seat in if you use regular oil from the parts store. see link

Good on the break in oil....did not understand that this engine had already been rebuilt...that of course changes everything...maybe this is just breakin smoke...?

engine was not overheated the first running. we reused the old pistons because it turns out they were industrial pistons which to my understanding just means there is a harder metal before the first ring that has a higher resistance to wear. so they cleaned the pistons up and put them back in with new rings. if the cylinder wall is glazed over is there any way to fix that problem without completely tearing down the engine again?

I agree with Peter on this one. If you put your hand over the filler tube while the motor is running and it is building up considerable pressure quickly, I would bet the intake manifold has a rust pinhole in the exhaust crossover and it is pressurizing the crankcase. Good luck!Peter M Jardine wrote:I'm not sure about the exhaust smoke, but check the intake manifold under the baffle.... they rot through under the steel cover, and blow exhaust fumes through the oil gallery. If you have a 283F, this is a common problem.
