225BVC Questions

Last weekend I was out in our 1972 17 Lancer. It has the Buick 225BVC. Engine started to lose power. I brought it to a stop and made a quick inspection. Pulled the dipstick and discovered the milky telltale of water in the oil. Pulled the boat out of the water and had my mechanic drain and flush all the oil and water out of the engine. Upon further inspection it turns out the water jackets in the cylinder heads have corroded through to the firing ring of the head gaskets. Looks like I need a new set of heads but after a quick internet search and some phone calls it looks like I have a tall order on my hands.

The boat has been used in salt water in the past but not since I rebuilt the motor about 8 years ago. If anyone out there knows where I can obtain a set of Buick 225 heads I'd appreciate the info. I'm wondering if it might be better to just get a remanufactured motor which seems to be available and do my own marine conversion. If anyone knows where I can get a set of exhaust manifolds as well Id appreciate any comments and help.

Jim Staib to the rescue, again. I would get that Ebay engine and rock on.
reasonable price...with some warranty evidently.

Thanks Jim. It looks a litte scary but I'll check it out. I found a remanufactured one I can get for under $2000 and I can do the rest of the work myself. Suggestions??

Thought I'd give it one last try for anyone out there who might have a good set of Buick 225 heads before I go ahead and get a full re-manufactured motor so I can have her ready for spring. I was able to find some on line but they were in poor condition and would have cost as much to rebuild than getting the whole engine. Hard to believe it was easier to get everything I needed for a Chrysler M-2 and K engine that were 30 years older.

So by time I got the heads out here and got them reconditioned, it was going to cost almost as much as a remanufactured engine ready to go and delivered to my garage door. Turned out to be a good thing because when I pulled the oil pan on the old motor there was still about an inch of milky sludge and a lot of metal in there. I said a nice thank you and saluted the old motor for 45 years of service (17 of which were mine as I'm the 3rd owner) before shipping it back for the core deposit. Cleaning and reassembly in progress.

I finished the new motor and installed it back in the Lancer. Did the break- in and everything went great. Took her up to Big Bear Lake for Memorial weekend, put some hours on her breaking everything in. Taking her to the Arrowhead Show next weekend for her 45th birthday. I love this little boat and cant wait to make more family memories on her.
