Hey Peter or anyone else who can help me with some pics and info on what kind of hinges are used for the engine cover on the 1970-74 XK19 and also some pics or drawings on how they are mounted to the top deck.

Hello,

I have a 1970 xk and the two doors open to the left and right unlike later years where the entire hatch opens towards the back of the boat with automotive hood hinges.

On models like ours there are two pins for each hatch that just go into the deck. The pins are mounted to small blocks of wood in the lower corners of the hatch door, pretty simple really. Mine are in need of work so I am not sure how reliable they were. If I get a chance to get to my boat I will snap a few pictures and post them.

I looked closely at your picture, have your hatches been riveted or secured together somehow? How does your hatch lift now, front to back or two pieces side to side? Perhaps yours was modified.

Smair,
Cool looking boat!
Look at one of the pics from my homepage www.xk19.com.
There you can see the hinges, and yes they are automotive. If you want to use the same on your boat you need to ad some sort of vertical support on each side in which you mount the hinges. Please be adviced that the deck you have has higher profiled "finns" (or what you might call them) compared to my deck. These could cause a problem when opening your hatch.

Hope this helps,

Peter

Hey Vince,

Yes the hatch was modified so that a sun pad could be attached on it and still be able to access the engine compartment in case of engine trouble or maintenance. The hatches came off while traveling on the lovely, smooth highways of Louisiana during a trip there and were damaged so I am looking at replacing it with a later model style hatch. Not pure but I use this boat alot since the restoration and want some convenience features.

Hey Peter, any idea what model vehicle the hinges come from or a part number?

Thanks again to all you Obsessed XK19 owners

I just finished a restoration on my '71 XK 19. Yes the hinges are automotive. I actually think they are from a Chevy Impala but I'm not 100% sure. My hinges were actually bolted to the deck, a weak area that always showed signs of cracking. I used a polished piece of stainless on the deck to reinforce the thru bolt connection. The side bolts were drilled through a piece of teak which was adhered to the fiberglass inner hatch opening. I'm not sure if this was original but it looks good and really stffens the fiberglas.

Mike,
I am 99,9% sure the teak peaces are original. I got em too and ive seen others. My hinges were too rusty when i got them so I was unable to read the number casted in them. Can you read the numbers on yours? Would be a great help when trying to locate new ones for my other boats.

I know this discussion took place some time ago; however, for the benefit of any others who search this topic, I recently purchased a '72 XK-19 and from what I could determine, the hatch hinges are from 1966-69 (plus or minus a year or two) Ford Fairlane, Ranchero, Torino, Comet, and Falcon.

Here's the hinge on an original unrestored XK22. Different finish but the hinge looks the same as does the mounting method.

My 1972 XK22 uses the same car style hood hinge as the others have posted picture of here. They are mounted on the teak blocks too.
