Green Vinyl
Hi,
I'm working on a 1951 U-22. I found 2 pieces of the original upholstery inside the stern seat back that covered the two hanger holes from the inside. The grayer blue in the center of the picture is a pretty good match for the original tolex blue found covering these holes. While I know that this will deviate from the the hull card. My family would rather go with a green upholstery. I have seen pictures of some out there; According to the mariners museum, green was offered. Of the 2,082 U-22's and 3 prototypes all were delivered blue except 36 maroon, 26 red, 4 gray, 1 white & 1 green.
Does anyone have a vinyl manufacturer and line name for what is considered the best green of the era? i.e. the large green roll in the top of the picture is "Morbern Marine Biscayne Teal" which appears to be the best match to the picture of the green chris craft cushion that I found on this site.
Of course pictures and monitors will skew the colors at times and a couple of the textures are too rough (the tolex greens rolled in the upper left).
I'm hoping that someone out there that has gone through this knows a current brand and color and can share their research.
Thanks & Happy Holidays!
Eric

Re: Green Vinyl
Eric,
The green cushion you are referencing was a material very short lived by C-C in the the early 1957 Capri's... so I would not rely on it as any standard or popular green color.
The darker forest greens that are popular for wood boats today were considered dated and out of style in the 30s, 40s and 50s and in the 60s it was turquoise and flashy greens that were more in vogue. Most would agree that dark green + blonde deck is not pleasing to the eye.
The only standard green C-C was using in some high-end 1940-41 models prewar and the same color immediately after the war in the 1946-48 25' Sportsmans is, in my experience, not everyones favorite. Some call it emerald green, or apple green, or my personal favorite: garden hose green. See pic. It looks right in the boats that it belongs in though.
If you family's heart is set on green, just pick one you like and go with it. If you want it correct, blue Tolex is your only option. They will both look good in a U-22.

Re: Green Vinyl
Hi Brain,
I always called it Granny Apple Green. The green leather in my 41 25' sportsman faded to a really nice light blue color so nicely you would think it was original if you didn't look at the leather where the stitching pulled away.

Re: Green Vinyl
Thanks Brian. I appreciate the background. I'll get some samples of each up against the ceiling boards that I'm refinishing and let everyone have another look.
Re: Green Vinyl
Just a note as you decide on a color--the darker green in my boat gets awful hot in the sun. Not sure if the blue might stay any cooler.

Re: Green Vinyl Correct Hidem
Next question; There are two styles of Hidem available, with or without the 2 pipe cords. Which style is correct for the early '50's ?
thanks

With cords, 5/8" wide. This no-cord stuff has only come around in the last 15 years.
