Cushion Size U22
Hi,
My hull card for a 1951 U22 states that the boat came with 6 cushions, 3 forward, 3 aft. The previous owner had new cushions made at some point, 3 odd sizes forward with the port and starboard being trapezoid shaped and two longer-rectangular aft instead of the 3.
My question is what were the original outside dimensions of the 3 forward and 3 aft cushions? i.e. 20"w x 20"l x 3"h or other, and were all 6 square or did they conform to the shape of the hull in a trapezoid shape? A dimensioned picture would be much appreciated if possible!
Thank you,
Eric

Re: Cushion Size U22
If anyone with a U22 that is accessible could help with measurements it would really help.
For the center cushions, rectangle, I believe they should be approx 18" deep and 20" wide x 3" thick. Then the side cushions would start the same and flare out for the front edge of the aft bench and in for the front edge of the forward bench.
Thanks

Re: Cushion Size U22
I strongly suggest that you measure your boat. I replaced all of my upholstery on my 1948 U22 last fall. I have a number of U22s in my area and I looked at several of them prior to taking on the upholstery job. I found that no two U22s had the same cushion configuration although I would bet they were all the same leaving the factory. Some had 3" thickness for the seatbacks some had 2". Some had two cushions aft, two forward, one forward and three aft. Some had channeled seatbacks. Clearly the configuration on each of these boats was changed over the years. My hull card calls for 6 loose cushions three forward and three aft. The cushions that were with the boat when I purchased it did not fit properly. I finally surmised that the loose cushions were made prior to the seat backs being reupholstered using 3" foam rather than the 2" that was the original thickness. I replaced the foam and the vinyl on the seatbacks myself (sewing is not required for the seatbacks). I then put the seatbacks in place on the boat and had an upholstery friend of mine measure and make the loose cushions. I know if I had used measurements from one of the other U22s that the job would not have turned out as well as it did.

One thing to consider is making the 3 cushions in the aft seat the same size and then the middle cushion in the front seat the same size. Then you will only be trying to figure out where the 2 tapered cushions go in the front, the rest wont matter. We try to do this when ever possible and believe Chris Craft did it this way as well.

Re: Cushion Size U22
yes, that makes the most sense. My hull card also says 3 forward and 3 aft. I see a lot of the aft cushions hanging over the 2-1/2" tall x 63-3/4" wide seat edge board. Although when you look at the original ads, the cushions are clearly behind the board to keep them on the bench.
thanks

Re: Cushion Size U22
Maritime,
My aft bench has a little taper to it as well. The front edge is 63-3/4" and the rear edge where the cleat is that the seat back rests against is 60-7/8". I may need to taper the side cushions out to fill the 1-3/8" + on either side. Or just make them square as you suggest and wedge them in a little.
Thank you

Re: Cushion Size U22
So it sounds like you have less then a 3 inch change overall and that would be only about 1 1/2 on each side, not really enough to make them tapered if you ask me. I'm pretty sure that Chris Craft was that picky as we are today. Most old pictures that I have seen the cushions were pretty loose side to side anyway because they were throw cushions not fit as tight as possible cushions
