What is the correct fastener for the RubRail?

Post by GCDPetaluma » Wed May 11, 2011 9:38 pm

Hello, I have a 1940 GW Utility. Should the screws be SS slot #6 flat head or oval? Thank you.

I have a 1936 not a 1940. This could be about the time of a transition from one screw type or another so I hoping someone like Brian Robinson can jump on this. He has restored many boats of this vintage so he will know the answer.

Off the cuff, I believe you will be looking for oval head nickel screws. Not stainless, though arguably if polished properly it is hard to tell the difference.

Your Gar should have the same 3-sided 7/8" rub rail as Chris-Craft. It uses #6 oval head slot screws.

Is your Gar Wood going to be ready for the Gathering of the Gar Woods this August at Lake Tahoe?

should all of the hardware on 16' be fastened with #6 oval? I have tried both #6 and #8 and both seem to look ok but not sure which is correct.

Depends on the part. Mostly #6s on a Gar though.
