Chris Craft Commander Rendezvous, Huron, Ohio Aug 21 - 23

Post by Paul P » Sat Aug 15, 2009 1:04 pm

Hello all,

Coming up August 21 - 23, 2009 !!

As we enter the final countdown for the big 2009 Chris Craft event on Lake Erie, we are already overflowing the harbor with boats, and well into our contingency plan, with the Huron Yacht Club graciously giving us more dock space.

Last year we broke the world record for classic fiberglass Chris Craft Commanders in one location with 52 boats registered, and this year we're looking at 75+ with a worry that there may be many drive-ins we may not know about. As this is being typed, a special invited guest is already en route from Buffalo, NY, aboard a 60-foot aluminum Roamer, steaming the length of Lake Erie to arrive sometime on Tuesday or Wednesday, and you'll be able to see her on the Huron live cam when she arrives (see link within referenced link below).

This year we have invited Roamers to also attend in order to add a little spice, and we managed to find a few exquisite examples, including a very nifty 1963 27' Custom Comet with a pair of 283 V8s, with 40-mph speed capability, along with several other exquisite examples.

The boats in this part of the country are maintained at a very high level. Anyone interested in seeing just about every model of Commander ever built, this is the place, because we'll likely have more than one of each of them, and in some cases several in a line.

All CCABC members are MORE THAN WELCOME to attend this event, as we have noted in past announcements here on the Buzz. We do ask that you please call (now) if you want a seat at the Saturday indoor brunch at the yacht club to hear Herb Pocklington, former General Manager of Chris Craft overseas operations, give his talk; and also if you want a seat at the Saturday evening dinner program featuring guest speaker Chris Smith. Chris is bringing his 19' V-drive Commander too! 8)

If anyone is able to bring a fiberglass Commander at this late date, we'll gladly accept your boat but we'll have to scramble to assure you are given the FIRST CLASS TREATMENT this event is known for, so we request you call me at 615-496-6349 or better yet, call Matt or Tim (see link) because they are at ground zero and I'm in Nashville at the moment, soon to be heading north. In order to get proper dockage and seats at the programs, you MUST register and let us know in advance, and obviously now time is short.

Excitement is peaking all around the lake, and we were recently advised there was a fleet of 14 classic wood Chris Craft cruisers of various years and lengths, all coming from Sandusky Ohio area, just to be at the event with us (they will be tied up along the sea wall, while the Commander fleet will be in the harbor). We have arranged the boats by model, length, and by beam to be sure everything will fit, and in case you have never been to Huron, Ohio, their dockage and harbor is extremely people-friendly, new, and nice. The Huron Yacht Club has again graciously thrown their doors open to our group, and in case you may not know, the people in Huron have their own brand of Northern hospitality that makes a southerner feel right at home.

The following link takes you directly to our dedicated web site for the event, co-hosted by the Chris Craft Commander Forum, Inc. (not affiliated with the Commander Club) on a shoe-string budget, along with hosts Matt O'Donnell and Tim Toth, both owners of exquisite 427-powered Commanders in the 35 and 38' lengths. Mine will unfortunately have to stay in Nashville for this event!

Here is that direct link to location, maps, agenda!
