Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, NY

Post by jmccredie » Mon Oct 05, 2009 1:08 pm

We recently visited the Glenn Curtiss Museum in Hammondsport, NY on our way from Chautauqua to Ithaca for a family visit. It is a wonderful museum known primarily for its aircraft exhibits. However, it also has a few beautiful wooden boats and a great motorcycle exhibit. In 1911 Curtiss developed the technology for taking off and landing on water thereby making seaplanes and flying boats practical. These early flying boats are a real treat from the man known widely as the "Father of Naval Aviation!" Visitors are welcome to visit the restoration shop and talk with volunteer craftsmen. In the spring there is the Finger Lakes Boating Museum Exhibit.

A must stop if you are traveling Rt. 86 on the Southern Tier of NY.
