Good morning folks. It appears that my wife is now fully indoctrinated w/ the "woodenboatitis" flu. Last night while watching the CBS evening news, there was a small piece about a guy who wants to build a 747 in his back yard. He goes to a airplane junkyard east of LA, in the desert. As he is going through the yard babbling about Pan Am seat cloth, BAM, there it is, a 1965-68, 30 some ft Chris Craft Sea Strake. Go to CBS.com click on Evening News and on the left is a list of feature stories, click on "man builds plane". If anyone can get it on this site, it'll be kinda fun. "Find the old Chris Craft" in the airplane story. It appears at the 2:29-2:40 or so minute mark. My wife could'nt wait for me to get home, to tell me about seeing 10 seconds worth of CC, in a two minute piece. 9 out of 10 people know or understand the old wooden boat flu. NOW, I want to find out where this place is and go rescue this poor boat. I wonder if the planes make fun of her? That's another Illness, sorry. See ya, Pete.

I saw it! Which is really amazing because my jaw was dropping and my eyes were rolling at the time. This guy is certainly more "out there" than all of us. Isn't he? He is, right?

I saw it too. In just the quick glimpse I got of it, it looked like it might be a lapstrake Trojan, a direct competitor of Chris Craft. The boat looked to have a straighter, flatter shear than a Sea Skiff or Cavalier Sea Strake. But I only caught a quick glimpse and I could be wrong.

Speaking of boneyards. I live in Louisville, KY which probably is not exactly the boating capitol of the US, so imagine my surprise when driving south on I71 and seeing hundreds of boats sitting in a field.

Well, I couldn't wait to explore. The guy that owns this place has a trucking company, So I assume he has his drivers pick things up on return trips. Not so many Chris Crafts but all makes. He seems to like Lymans and has many large cruisers shrink wrapped.

As far as I know, he is not actively selling but i could be wrong. I have bought a couple of parts from him off a Lancer. If this guy has the boat disease, he makes most everyone else look like an amateur.

I do some flying in that area occasionally, maybe I can get an aerial photo one day so everyone can fantasize about the 'Land of Old Boats".

Lets start a CC Aerial Pic thread- no hijacking intended

Post by THE RAZZ » Wed Nov 18, 2009 10:25 am

Patrick,
Please shoot an aerial of that bone yard for us. How about a new thread- Aerial CC Pics!
Here the aerial pics should be of CCs. But, exceptions could be made occasionally.

Seque- Here is an (exception) aerial shot last May of the USS HORNET shot from a 1944 B-17 touring over the San Francisco Bay. A pic of the Hornet from a B-17- can it get any better?

Wow, that guy's got it good, I mean bad, but that's good, right?!

Anyone have the interior of a classic cruiser in their garage?

That is kind of cool to have the first class cabin of a PanAm 747 to entertain your friends in. How would you like to open up a door to your den and walk into the saloon of a beautiful old Chris-Craft.

This is like the old Seinfeld episode where Kramer constructs a replica of the set from the Merv Griffin show in his living room. Kind of strange, and really worthy of some sort of behavioral study. Wow- the rest of us hobbyists are a bunch of pikers compared to this fellow.

Amen for those more "over the top" than me. It gives me much needed examples to take to my wife to demonstrate how "normal" I am.

Well said Bill, sometimes I get myself in that situation and have some "Splainin"" to do to the little lady.

Alternative- marry the girl who drove daddy's brand new XK-150 when she was in HS to hedge your bet on future toys.

Great Post,

It's funny there don't seem to be that many of us girls that have been afflicted by this flu. Frankly, I would rather be under a hull that in a mall any time!

That's true! Why is that? My wife is my First Mate most of the time but doesn't show up when it's time to pull her for bottom inspection and maintenance.

John, you are a lucky man, even the finger is cute. Actually, my wife does help but wants no part of the things that don't show (bottom, engine, bilge, etc.).

You have a wonderful family and it was a pleasure to read about you all in this Brass Bell issue.

Respect,

John,

Thanks. That's Sami in the photo, a High School Junior that's played varsity volleyball the last 2 years. She plans to come to Tavares with me in March.
