Vintage Race Boat Shop Newsletter - Tavares Recap/Photos

Post by Bill John » Sat Apr 10, 2010 5:23 am

Good morning Gang,

After a very mild winter with very little snow, spring has arrived early here in beautiful
Wolfeboro. The snowpack is long gone, we survived the frost heaves on our country
roads, there was no real mud season, and we set a record for the earliest ice-out on our
beloved Lake Winnipesaukee. We are now busy in the shop working on our spring projects
and have already started planning our spring launching ceremonies and celebrations !!!

Tavares - Vintage Race Boat Regatta & ACBS Antique Boat Festival

Tavares Vintage Race Boat Regatta
After many years of wanting to make the Mt Dora/Tavares ACBS boat show and many
years of excuses, this is the year that we finally made the trek south to sunny and warm
Florida. We hauled My Precious to participate at both the Tavares Vintage Race Boat
Regatta and then the Tavares Antique & Classic Boat Show the following weekend.
The weather was sunny and warm, the vintage race boats were beautiful and fast, and
we had a great time. Many thanks to Dick Whyte and the entire CRA crew for a fantastic
vintage event. We had a great time and now Tavares in on our annual spring schedule,
so look for our NH Navy again at Tavares in 2011 !!!

Magnolia Inn
After participating in the Tavares Vintage Race Boat Regatta, we took a few days off to
rest at the award winning Magnolia Inn a grand historic estate circa 1926 in beautiful
downtown Mount Dora, Florida. We stayed in the original Carriage House of the estate,
strolled the beautiful grounds in complete privacy, enjoyed the ambiance of old Florida,
and looked forward an exquisite breakfast each day. Many thanks to innkeepers Connie
and Lori for making our stay very special, we have already booked our stay for next year ???!!!

Tavares Antique Boat Festival
The Sunnyland Annual Antique Boat Festival is the largest boat show of its kind in the USA. It is for this vary reason the show has returned to its new and much larger location, at the water front Wooton Park in Tavares, Florida. Attended by more than 30,000 spectators over the four day period of the event, more than 300 boats were displayed in the water and on land. On Friday we signed up for the cruise through the Dora Canal and lunch at Hickory Point. After our cruise through the Dora Canal and lunch, we returned to the Tavares boat show. Friday was registration and setup day for this huge extravaganza, with well over 300 registered boats and endless rows of vendor booths. Our friend Pete Fish got the ride of his life in Gar Wood's Miss America IX, with current owner Chuck Mistele at the controls. Pete also displayed his stunning El Lagarto.

2010 Vintage Event Schedules - another summer of fun !!!

It is time to mark your calendars and register for the summer events that you plan
to attend. Please be considerate and register early, to let the volunteer organizers know
you are planning to attend, and enable them to properly plan for head and boat counts.

APBA Vintage Race Boat Circuit
Our first APBA sanctioned vintage race boat regatta was at Clayton, New York in 1992,
where we got a chance to run our beloved vintage race boats on an actual race course,
running some pretty hot laps. Since then, in the spirit of Gar Wood and Orlin Johnson,
we have run our beloved Gar Wood Speedster Obsession on the APBA Vintage Race
Boat Circuit. Like vintage car racing, there are actually people out there who run their
vintage race boats on APBA (American Power Boat Association) sanctioned race courses,
and participate in a very active APBA Vintage Race Boat Circuit.

CRA Vintage Race Boat Circuit
The Classic Raceboat Association (CRA) is a Florida based organization that was formed
to facilitate the exhibition of classic race boats of all types from the early 1900’s to the
1980’s. All race boat types are welcomed, and during the winter months when the APBA
vintage circuit is in hibernation, we haul down to sunny and warm Florida to participate in
a growing Florida CRA Vintage Race Boat Circuit. CRA is also available to assist regatta
organizers in planning, establishing specific staffing, assigning boats to flights (heats),
providing liability insurance and safety rules. Through these CRA sanctioned events, the
public learns of the rich history of boat racing and the colorful people who made it all happen.

Local ACBS Vintage Events
Since 1979, we have also been active members and promoters of our New England Chapter
of the Antique & Classic Boat Society. We are Board Members, continue to maintain the
chapter Website, and we are very active promoting and participating at local ACBS vintage
events here on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee, NH.

docks at 1 PM for a scenic cruise. The route will depend on weather and water conditions.
After our Spring Romp, we will gather at the home of Charlie & Ilona Train for a cocktail
party, live music and a catered dinner. Lots of good friends, food and drink.

We usually have around 10/15 vintage wonderers attending, with a couple of rocking chairs, hot coffee, way too many donuts, and lots of good vintage boat banter.
