Post by mattbyrne » Mon Aug 15, 2011 1:04 pm

What a great show. I made the trek west last weekend and met some fellow wooden boater's and saw a fantasic collection boats.

Matt Smith, Reg and the rest of the woodyboater gang where hard at work all weekend. They should have material for quite a while.

Reg, Aka Texx was doing the video while I was shooting stills.

PS. click the 720p version at the bottom for a much better picture.

Don, great videos, Thanks for posting it.

Reg, thanks for the great camera work, especially of Paul's boats. Paul, they're amazing. Love the gas can shot!

Thanks for posting Don - it looks great and was a lot of fun. Huge wake from the big Riva shoot boat, and that caused some interesting moments.

The Scripps 208 in the SP was limited to about 1500 or so RPM as the engine was 2 hours fresh but it still pushed through without trouble, even with a sea level prop. What a torque monster it is.

The Chrysler Royal in the Gar was overmatched at that altitiude and it was further burdened with a sea-level prop so it was out of breath.

Great work from you and Texx.

Paul;

It was great fun but don't take offense that Karen looked much better behind the wheel. :D

My personal fav was the 25' Sports. That Scripps looked like it was a blast and was just idling around.

What do you think will be top speed once it is dialed in?

Don - According to factory literature it was 39 MPH, and I see no reason to suspect it wouldn't be close. She is on full plane at about 1400 -1500 or so, and most of the video was shot at 12-1300rpm with the odd scoot to 1600. I was watching the gauges very closely - that was the first real run under load the engine ever had. Operating "range" is given as 2000-2400 rpm and with a 17x21 prop it moves along well.

Jim gave specific instructions on break in operating paramteters and we don't want to breach his advice.

I think the Gar would benefit from a smaller prop and that the engine would give fine service in that boat at that altitude if properly propped. She runs and rides beautifully at our home lake, altitude about 1100 ft.

Paul, I would have guessed the Shuswap to have been at a much higher elevation than that, given the snow capped mountain ranges in the region.

Both boats were amazing to watch in the video. I'm thinking that someone got soaked in the sedan while cutting through the wakes with the windshield vented.

Thanks for the photos Matt, and video, Don. In my my 17 years of attending that show this year had to be the best in terms of big, quality boats. Who can argue with 33 original Gar Woods lined up! It was the largest collection of original Gar Woods in one place since the factory closed in 1947. One for the memories.

yes, indeed, the combination of moving the show back to august, and the gar marque class, produced a show with a marked uptick in quality. It was apparent from the moment one reached the entrance to the docking area where one could see all of the boats spread out a few feet down below.

Terry did a great job as mc for the award ceremony and many of the usual suspects were there including matt and texx from woody boater, etc. Carla did a really sweet thing in inducting Al Schinnerer into the Hagerty hall of fame. Certainly well deserved. Herb Hall is to be commended too for working with the foundation to get the show back to the august date. weather was fabulous. doesnt get any better than that for a woody boat show.
