Sea Skiff hull seam repairs

Post by mlforrester » Fri Nov 25, 2005 12:34 am

Over the 10+ years I've owned my 1963 model 27 ft. Sea Skiff more and more water is finding its' way in between some of the seams between the lapstrakes. We're due to haul out in the spring of 2006 and I'm looking for input from anyone who's has had similiar problems with water weeping in between the strakes. When was your fix for the problem?

I think that Don D's second book goes into more details on this kind of construction.

That might help you understand how to deal with it. I do not have the second book yet or I might be able to expound.

I can tell you what will not work for this problem. I tried to solve it first by cleaning finish off the exterior of each lap under water and putting a bead of 3M 5200 down each seam and then rounding it off/in with a tongue depressor. Went on fine but a couple of cruises and the pounding began pulling it off in long strips. After a couple of years almost all of it has come off. dick baner 59 skiff ranger 22'
