Keel Condition 70 Connie

Post by Jim Godlewski » Thu Sep 14, 2017 7:33 pm

I'm posting for the owner Jack Jensen in regards to his 1970 Connie keel splitting. He's unsure if something needs to be done to address the splitting. Do these photos help at all?

Hi Jim,
What I think I can see from the pics looks more like some checking going on there, it doesn't look too alarming. If you can't see daylight through it and it will hold screws, I would soak it in epoxy and reassemble.
It's hard sometimes to know where to stop taking things apart.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

opening a cruiser is always opening Pandora box......just do your best...sister some points if you have to....but get that boat back up and going....best of luck.

Jim why don't you post this question on Don Dannenberg's forum. He usually weighs in on these things and may have some suggestions. Ed

Yes Well..,
Somebody used my name so I thought I might respond.

Those photos show only surface checking, lots of surface and near sub-surface darkening (possibly oil?) and not any kind of 'splitting'?

I can't really see it from here but I'd say soak it with CPES (the real stuff) and paint it well. Side views of the keel appear healthy?

Captain Nemo has the right answer; "If you can't see daylight through it and it will hold screws", It's likely still strong enough to continue it's purpose.

I forgot to mention there,
Probe what you have with a sharp, thin, ice-pick, top, sides, and bottom.
Small pressure, maybe 2-pounds, and see what constitutes "sound" or not?

If the ice-pick, at 2-lbs pressure, goes in 1/8" or so, it's likely 'sound'?
If it goes in 1/2" or more, there might be worry?
