Hi, I slick seam my 28’er for two reasons, it seals up quicker when soaking up, and I think it stops paint from building up in the seams. When the planks swell the hard built up paint doesn’t move and will tend to crush the wood fibers on the plank edges. I have to haul out and paint every year so that is a lot of paint buildup. If you don’t have to haul out seasonally, the paint build up shouldn’t be an issue.
At 46’ that’s quite a daunting task. My boat takes about 2 tubs of compound and 6hrs to do all the seams.

I guess I would ask if it was your boat when last in use and what would be her normal spring take-up time. If yes and her take up time was ok, I would put her in as is and leave her in the slings until she tightens up. Put a couple of sump pumps in and have the yard lower her in steps. Do not rely on your bilge pumps until she has almost stopped taking water. Check your through hull fittings before doing anything. But, I have never seen your boat and the above may be bad advice.

By the way, how far have the seams opened up?

I am the new owner of the boat. I cant ask the previous owner because he has passed . I could check with the yard though. The seams do not appear that open .The conny has a real tight looking bottom though . The boat is in remarkably good condition .

If you have plenty of help, I guess I would do all the seams. It can’t hurt.
A lot of yards don’t really like to let a boat hang to soak and will charge extra if they do. It’s getting harder to find wood boat friendly yards these days.

Once I get her back to the cove on the erie canal next year we wont have to worry about swell up. Captain Paul at pirates cove is wood boat freindly. Captai Nemo, are you ont the Erie in Lyons NY ? Just out of curiousity , There is Miller marine who used to have a lot of old woodies around there. :D :D :D

Yes, my dock is right behind my house right next door to Miller's. I have barn space there for winter storage. Miller still has a few woodies left there. He also has a treasure trove of parts, most anything I ever need.
My boat was stored at Pirate's Cove by her former owner, he had a cottage on Horseshoe Island.

I am wondering what boat is yours I might know it. I had an owens at millers for a summer, that one is now destoyed. Steve is an interesting character for sure. I have had lots of old woody crusiers over the years. Does he still have that huge 40something owens dcfb there

Yes, Steve is interesting for sure and is doing well. The DCFB Owens was sold and fixed up by a guy from Geneva. As far as I know it is still on Seneca lake.
My boat is a 28' Chris- Sedan Cruiser w/FB, "Wild Oats", acquired in 2008. I'd post a picture but, it won't let me. :x

Good to hear about your boat and the owens. I like to hear when old woodies are saved and being used . I got my 1959 46 conny for a steel they wanted 9,800 for it I paid 2,500. I have it on hull regisrty under Nicole Lee. :D :D

These cruisers are really only worth what someone is willing to pay. Good for buyers.
You think you can post a pic of your boat here on The Buzz? I am still having issues with the site. I can only access The Buzz and I have to go kind of a roundabout way to get here.
I found out I can post pics using my iPad. Pic is “Wild Oats”.

I'm having problems too. The registry is one of the parts of the site that I'm blocked out from for some reason. :(
Thanks for the compliment, always a work in progress.
