Deck toe rail on 16' Garwood

Post by John Cederstrom » Fri Feb 16, 2018 2:00 pm

I'm restoring a 1946 16' Garwood Ensign and have pretty much got the deck ready for seal, stain and varnish. One more sanding required. I've got a question regarding installing the foredeck toe rail. I used the WEST System on the deck boards. I'm thinking I may want to remove the toe rail down the road for ease of re-varnishing the deck(maybe a dumb idea)[img][/img]. Would I be best using a non-adhesive caulk (if so, which one), or screwing the rail down with no caulk/adhesive, or gluing it down with WEST or 5200? See attached pics.

I would use mahogany color Life Caulk or nothing at all.

I would use some Dolphinite bedding compound on that.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

Thanks to all. Great help. I wasn't sure what common practice was. I should have a good fit---am presently working on joint where the toe rails meet. Whichever way I choose I'll make sure the underside is sealed. Thanks again.

Wouldn't hurt to CPES the underside of the toe rail before you bed it. I would also use mahogany BoatLife

Is Mahogany BoatLife less purple than mahogany 5200?

Yes, but with 5200 you would never be able to get the toe rail off without ripping the wood deck apart.

Agree, don't USE 5200.....but I was just curious if boatlife came in mahogany color...guess I need to look that up....but 5200 mahogany is purple to my eye.

Boat life makes Life Caulk which comes in a mahogany color which is a much better color than 3M5200's "mahogany" color. I rarely use it but for removable stuff it works well and very closely matches red stained mahogany.

I have had great luck with all the Life Calk line. The mahogany color is very nice and is sand-able after curing. Be aware that Life Calk has about a 7 day cure time and needs humidity to cure. It can delay a project if you are not planning for it.

Boat Life also makes a product called Life Seal that works well and has a much shorter cure time, but is designed more for fiberglass.
