Restoring Deck

Post by jlgsail » Wed Sep 16, 2020 6:18 pm

I am about to start on the deck of my "51-18 foot Riviera and need to buy marine grade plywood to bleach for the center of the deck and around the cockpit. Do I buy mahogany or Birch, etc finish?

They never used plywood on the decks of Riviera. It should be solid 1/2 inch planking.

Should add it is mahogany. Also there is considerable debate as to exactly what the bleached areas should look like. This was evident in the Tahoe concours a few years ago featuring blonde deck runabouts. Mike, maybe you have a suggestion here as well. (Some decks end up looking too yellow or somewhat milky in appearance.)

Gentleman: The boat when I got it had been restored with plywood over the whole deck but I wanted to plank where the stripes are and use marine grade plywood in the to be bleached areas so as to elimunate seams as much as possible.I am restoring the boat for my use and enjoyment only. :)

If that is all you are trying to accomplish, perhaps you can deck again using mahogany plywood, bleaching the one area and making false seams as you want elsewhere, with live seams as required?
