Old Side Planking
While restoring my boat I was able to save the old side planking, which came in handy for laying out the new planking. Now that that portion of the resto is complete my question is what to do with the old planking? It seems a shame to just throw it away, my buddy says I should make some sort of collage out of it, maybe hang it on the wall of my shop or something. What do you guys think, should I just throw it on the trash pile or is there something constructive to do with it, what did you do with your old planking??

I always thought it would be neat to plane it down to 'sound' wood and then, since it would probably be thin, laminate it for use in furniture. Actually, the options are limitless, and what a conversation piece. Glue enough pieces together and turn something on a lathe.
Pens, lamps, shift knobs or carve a paddle for when you run out of gas.

There's one in every crowd!
Guys are happy with their pencil cases, nautical toothbrush holders, picture frames, etc. Then some darn over achiever like Chad makes a surf board! Are you kidding me?
Hey everybody! Don't be intimidated!
Torobanor wants some regular guy ideas!
I really like the ones that are just ideas that sound great but were never followed up on. In that catagory I offer: build a model of your boat about 1/8 scale.
And in the catagory of things that I have actually done: Cut it into narrow strips, sand off the corners by hand and have absolutely original mahogany dowels.
Keep the ideas coming. Everybody has a pile of material waitin to be "repurposed".

Chad that's some amazing work!
Really like the ideas you guys have thrown out especially the paddle idea, was planning to build one anyway and the old Phillipine mahogany is nice and light, would make a great paddle.
Keep the ideas coming, guest I'm not alone on this subject.

The surfboard was more of an experiment for me than anything. I needed a project that would fit in my basement, and one that would satisfy the "itch" during the winter months. It was NOT DIFFICULT and very enjoyable. Get the whole family involved! There are tons of plans available on the net. I went with Grain Surfboards out of Maine.
Most kits use Western Red or Eastern White Cedar. While not as light as Cedar, Mahogany does have excellent rot-resistance and is easy to work with. The headache was filling all the screw holes. The board is 10ft in length and weighs just over 30lbs. I transport it in the back of my truck or under my arm.
In retrospect, I should have built a stand-up paddle board (all the rage). I know a couple of club members that are going to give it a shot. My board is a little too narrow and not buoyant enough for paddling.
It's just wood, you can make anything your imagination can dream up. No such thing as a bad idea. Why not something that goes back into the water? Canoes, kayaks, surfboards, skim boards, wake boards, water skis, toy boats, paddles, scale models, etc.
Oooh, how about a skateboard deck? That would be cool. Or a boomerang. Or a walking stick. Or a Chris Craft coffin...

Thanks Brian, "rad" is what I was shooting for.
I am totally stoked to shred some righteous waves.
The surf season here on Lake Michigan starts late November. We get some gnarly 3 foot waves with ice chunks.

Or you could send it to Diederick......
Since I have become somewhat infamous for not knowing when to stop; I'm sending a bundle of old Perlita Too planks to Diederick to create something akin to this "GMC" piece he did of his own truck.....
And check out his other works @ oudhout.com
Every piece of the image is a 'found, recycled' piece of scrap wood. No painting at all. Or you could try to do it yourself.........
