Decks on 1955 17' Sportsman

Post by George Emmanuel » Wed Nov 06, 2013 9:48 am

My 1955 17' Sportsman has what I think is incorrect decking on the stern area. The bow of course has the striped decks but the rear deck is striped also with the planks running fore and aft, and those planks overlap the top transom board. This boat had new decks installed a number of years before I bought it and I think they took liberties and decided to match the bow design.

I've seen several '56 Sportsmans and they all have 2 planks running side to side that butt the top transom board which comes all the way to the top. I cannot find a picture of a 1955 model for comparison.

Was the 1955 different from the 1956? My hull card shows this Sportsman to be "custom" because it had the optional (at that time) inside covering boards. Could that designation also include a change in the rear deck?

Thanks!!

George,
I have a 55 17' Custom Sportsman Hull CC-17-850 and I have enclosed some photo's of the original decking. As you can see the aft deck is original and the front deck has been customized as a "See Through" I thought I would throw that in...

Thanks Pete---that confirms my suspicions! My hull # is CC-17-979 but it is incorrect in the ACSB directory.

I had the green bilge paint duplicated as best as possible using pieces inside the boat that had some spilled on them that was not affected by bilge water. I had George Kirby Paint Co. make it. You can reference my name should you order some.

I had hull number 1001. Rear deck is side to side.

Very Cool to read this! I have hull 861.
It is so great to see that the others are out there.

I had a 55 17 foot Sportsman. It had green bilges and the aft deck planks went wide to side. As I recall, the top transom plank went up past the aft deck plank and was faired to the same curve as the deck.

Thanks for the information. I like the original style better and have returned the boat to the original style decking.

Does anyone have pictures of their completed floor showing linoleum and hatch trim? So far all I've been able to see are decks with the black ribbed rubber w/out trim. And I'd love to see the port side of an engine box housing the KLC carb.

I'm unable to find the gray Royelle so I'm substituting Forbo 3032 Mist Gray which has a marbleized pattern but not as broad as the Royelle----unless someone knows where to get the Royelle?

George,
I have not spoken to Jeannie at Southern Crown Boatworks in a while but try and give her a call and see if they handle something close for you. 1-800-746-3857.
Also have you pulled up anything on Boat Buzz? Are you sure about the spelling? Could it be Raybelle?
