1965 Chris Craft 36 Cavalier Yacht

Post by clemxd » Mon Apr 14, 2014 4:32 am

Hi,
i am new here. I got a 1965 36ft Cavalier Yacht in a bad condition. She stood 3 years outside without any cover and nowbody cares. I would like to restaurate the boat and i have some questions.

First i ordered the drawings at Marine Museeum but i havent got them yet. I have begun to remove all the paintings of the boat to see all the demages. Some parts of the hull are delaminated, bekause lots of water was in the boat. Does somebody know, how thick the plywood is of the bottom? I measured 20mm, but In the 1965 Chris Craft Catalog stood 5/8", what is this in mm? And how comes the difference? Should i repair only the broken areas, or should I replace the whole plate?

thanks in advance for the answer and sorry for my english

clemens

bottom is 5/8" sides 3/8". I owned the same boat until 1999. 1965, 36 CC Cavalier. Is yours a flat hull or lapstrake? The replacement of plywood is fairly easy to do. More importantly is the condition of the main frames; keel, chines, bulkheads, etc. that is the expensive and more difficult work. Where was the boat when you bought it?

Clemens Welcome aboard.
5/8 inch is 16mm. Google for metric conversion tables.
Where are you?

I am from germany. The boat is not a Seastrake it has a smooth hull. The boat was imported to germany in 1965. The first owner died in 2009 and the boat was sold to a person that never cares. So it came to our Marina where I found it.

Today I took a piece of plywood out of the bottom and believe me, it is 20mm (19.8mm) thick. What has happened?

That's closer to our 3/4 inch. 20mm=.78 "
A few things...
Different bottom?
Swollen Plywood?
Like Jim says,
Catalog states 5/8

Bet on SWOLLEN plywood....not good.....but clearly explains the different thickness. Here in the states, sadly, that boat likely would not be worth doing...maybe a real rare boat over there....good luck.

does swollen plywood keeps the thickness after drying? 4mm difference is 25% more than it should be. i cant imagine that it comes from the water. also I checked different areas in the bottom (areas where the water stood in and areas that never seen water for 4 years) and there is allways the same: 20mm. I look forward, what the hull record says. Maybe I will become more understanding.

Is this perhaps an Italian 36? if so, perhaps built with slightly different spec material explaining this discrepancy.

If there is some delamination. Have any screws pulled out?, if so, it has swollen.

today i got the information from the first owner, that the boat got a new bottom years ago. that explains simply the difference.
