Two piece transom frame ??

Framing, planking and fairing. Repair, or reconstruction. If it's hull related, you'll find it here.

Two piece transom frame ??

Post by jahearne » Mon Feb 16, 2015 8:05 pm

The new family member is on the hard for some much needed maintenance, soft pillow blocks and bottom paint. A 1960 32' Constellation moved from Antioch to her new home on Bethel Island. While inspecting a leak in the lower transom, we soon discovered rotted frames. My question is the section on the transom frame where two sections are bolted together, is that factory from Chris-Craft?

The fellow helping me out believes that somebody had previously repaired that area by sistering a plank to the other side and then bolting it together because he can't understand why the factory would piece that together rather than make it from one solid piece. Both sides are exactly the same. I think it's factory, but me too can't understand the reason behind two pieces instead of one.

I'll get my research package from Mariner's Museum as soon as I remember to write down the hull number when I am near a computer!

Thanks!

John, the lower part of that frame doesn't appear to have any original bilge paint that the upper part has on it. Is it the same on the port side? If so, I would guess that it has been repaired. Except for the chines under the cabin sliding windows, those corners are the next most vulnerable area for finding problems.

Thanks Al,

Good point, the other side does have the same lack of grey paint. My Boatwright is correct in thinking that the frames were partially replaced.

I'll let you all know how the repairs go and keep you all informed. Thanks again,

Cheek boards and apron. I can't imagine a CC cruiser that hasn't had that problem. Sometimes you get lucky and yank the transom planks off in time to save the frames. I was lucky that way. I decided to replace the transom planking after my favorite boatwright stuck his screwdriver through the transoms down by the the exhaust pipe. He bet me a six pack the frames were gone. Not so, I was lucky and I shared the six pack with him.

We've been hard at it..

The trouble with the corners rotting out that it takes out both sides of the boat. Nobody can accuse us of short planking this lass! Every plank replaced in it's entirety! Still have a lot of work to do, but so far: rudders and struts pillow blocks have been replaced. New shafts, strut bearings, rudders, stuffing boxes - all cleaned up and re-installed. Props balanced. New mufflers... and a gallon of CPES, more bilge paint & primer. The transom is going to get additional frames and blocking for a future swim platform or not.

That's a strange one. The planks around it look pretty good. Almost looks like some sort of compression or impact damage. That will require surgery for sure.

Nice work indeed, John. Looking great! So we owe all this progress to the dog? Good dog!

Glad you found the filled bottom hole before it found you out on the water somewhere. That would have taken a very large bilge pump to overcome.

No need to steam them.... pour hot water on them and put a block in middle and weights at each end.
Your repair looks familiar.

The last of the planks with the exception of the upper transom plank because we still have work to do on the aft deck.

Great pics. I would like to ask if you used any sealant or adhesive when you installed the the bottom transom plank and the side planks to the chines and battens. Thanks

I have another question. What kind of mahogany did you use for the planking? Thanks again.

We used African mahogany and Sapele. Mahogany was in short supply last year, so we went with Sapele on the hull sides. Sapele is harder than mahogany, but it looks real nice. All the Sapele is primed and painted.

Triple blocked
I mentioned to my boatwright that the cleats are bolted in near the corners. So he triple over builds it and blocks it up to no end!

The scarfed brace in front of the Tecate originally stopped at the corner. We decided to continue it all the way the side.

Here's Cory clamping the sections of the aft deck in place.

The pieces are cut at an angle tie-in and to support the ends of the curved deck planks.
