Meranti Mahogany

Post by steve bunda » Sat Oct 03, 2015 8:27 am

I would like to know if anyone has worked with Meranti as the substitution for Phillipine { luan } , and how it machines, bends, and finishes. I have heard of mixed results? Thanks , Steve

The "mixed results" probably comes from the inconsistency in density found in Meranti as compared to the Philippine variety. The wood near the center of the log is apt to be weak and brittle. So quarter-sawn boards could be difficult to bend evenly and may crack on the side closer to the log center. The grain is slightly interlocked and has the appearance of other Mahogany species but its density variations may add to its challenge of consistent cutting, bending and finishing.
