Planning Surface 1941 17' Barrel Back

Post by dougz » Sun Oct 25, 2015 4:55 pm

Hello - Does anyone know the length of the planning surface for a 1941 17' Barrel back? Based on my boat when taking it apart I would guess it's up to about the front of the engine. But there was a broken stringer and the engine had pushed the bottom down while sitting on a trailer for many years so hard to tell. Thank you.

Doug, i will post a picture of our 1938 17" at speed. I believe the hulls are basically the same? with the exception that of course starting in 1940 they increased the tumblehome to give the barrelback look? If this is correct, then the planing starts around the back of the front seat, a little further forward that you thought? hope this helps.

curious, doug, what you want that information for? Also, even if your boat was in good shape, i dont think there would be any way to tell just by looking, what element of the flat part of the bottom is involved in planing?

Hello - Thank you for the reply's. From what I had read told me the planning surface was about have the length of the boat. This would bring me to about the back of the front seat. So I take this as the keel should go from stern to midship with a consistent angle then start it's curve to where it connects with the gripe. But when I put a straight edge running up the keel landings I only have a consistent angle from stern chine to the front of the engine before it starts to curve. I am trying to make sure I don't rebuild the bottom with the planning surface to short. So I am looking for a consensus on how long the "flat" part, planning surface, really is on this boat before reframing it. See picture of current state.

Thanks. I am no expert on this but think your best bet would be to copy the bottom of another boat in your model.

Doug, Before I started the restoration of my '48 Deluxe Runabout, I ordered a set of factory drawings from the Mariners Museum and I find myself constantly referring to them for issues such as this. I just checked my plans and they show the keel starting to slant up right around the front of the engine/ rear seat back. I also just checked the new keel I am in the process of installing and it is the same as the plans, thank goodness!!

I highly recommend getting a set of drawings for your boat if they are available. I also recommend joining the forums on Don Danenberg's site. Don is a wealth of information on restoring these boats and is very generous with sharing his knowledge. There are also many very knowledgeable members on the forum who also contribute a wealth of knowledge.

Good luck with the project,

The angle your describing is about right. Chris Craft did really change the keel angle until around the mid 50's.
