I am refinishing my 58 Cavalier. When I removed the exhaust pipe trim ring on the outside, it looks like they used grey plumbers putty to seal around the diameter of the exhaust pipe and the hole in the wood of the transom.
I would think that would get brittle over time, but much of it was still pliable.
What is the correct product to seal this with?
Thanks,

You can use caulking cotton or I use the gasket material you can get for wood stove doors, then use bedding compound or a caulking like boatlife under the trim ring.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.
