Correct blue stripe color

Post by StValentine » Fri Apr 01, 2016 9:58 pm

I'm currently painting the hull of my 57' Constellation. Once I'm done, I'm going to paint the iconic blue stripe on the sides and back. I want to make sure I get this exactly right. How do I find out the exact color? Also, how do I find out exactly how thick the stripe is supposed to be?

There are a few color photos in the online archive that may get you close to the original color. Look at the color photo on the back cover of the 1964 Full Line Brochure. Its the 57' Connie. Also several color photos are included in the 1965 Chris-Craft Catalog. All of the blue stripes in these photos appear to be the same blue. As I recall, I picked a dark blue Pettit gloss paint that looked "K for close" and went with it on the Connie shown on my Boat Buzz photo above my name.

I have used Interlux Brightside "flag blue" on a few projects. Not sure if it is perfect but it looks great. :)

The blue stripe in the 1961 and 1962 Chris Craft Catalog is wider than those shown in the 1963 and later catalogs. Also in '61 the waterline stripe was red, in '62 midnight blue. I notice in later catalogs the waterline stripe is raised a bit and white is shown between it and the anti fouling paint. Who knows why! My boat is a '62 but is painted with the narrower '63 and later blue stripe. The color referenced in papers I received from the Mariner's Museum is #59-800 Marlin Blue Undercoat and #70-800 Marlin Blue Finish Coat.

After looking closer, the 1964 Brochure shows a red waterline stripe and wide blue stripe at the topside windows below the shear for the 57' Connie. Later catalogs may show a black waterline stripe but the same blue stripe on the topsides on the 57 footers.
What year model is your 57' Constellation?
