Generator Wiring Questions

Post by bob swensen » Thu Aug 17, 2006 1:33 pm

We have a 1956 CC Sportsman with an MBL. It was completely rewired and adapted to 12 volt before we bought it. ALSO, the previous owner disconnected the wire from the hot side of the cutout and wired the cutout straight to the hot side of the ignition. Since we have owned it, we have had generator problems and recently melted the generator down. My questions:

- why would the cutout be wired to the ignition, forcing the generator to push so far to the battery?

- can I simply reconnect the cutout to the hot side of the solenoid?

- what about connecting the cutout to BOTH solenoid and ignition?

Thanks in advance for any advice!!

Bob,
The cut out lead should go to the Amp meter. Chances are the ignition lead goes there. It should be moved back to the amp meter as the cut out lead should be heavier. Attached is a wiring diagram.Image
