Generator and regulator
Boat is a '59 18' continental with CC 185 V-8 recently purchased. Among many invoices included was one for a generator rebuild. Amp gauge shows discharge when it should but it is not charging. It is equipped with the typical 3 wire regulator mounted on the stringer. If memory serves back in my teen age years to test the system we grounded either the field or arm to bypass the regulator. Anyone remember the test or another diagnostic tricks to try when spring comes?
Re: Generator and regulator
Try polarizing the generator.

Re: Generator and regulator
Make sure the wires on the back of the amp gauge are on the correct sides. If reversed it will show discharge when its actually charging.
