Is there any good reason to mess with a '67 big block Ford engine that is running at 120° without a thermostat. The specs say it should be 140°. The engine has been running great for a long time.
The only thermostat available for this engine is a 160° unit that would require holes being drilled in it to get down to 140°.
The owner of the boat wants to know if there would be any efficiency/performance benefits from getting back the missing 20° of operating temperature.
Thanks
John

Re: Engine Operating Temperature
If the engine spec calls for operating temp of 140 and she runs at 120, I'd leave it be. Better to run a little on the cool side than too hot. I'm not an expert, but I doubt an extra 20 will improve performance. Happy Boating!

run that baby...heck the gauge could me off that amount. That spec seems chilly to me?

Re: Engine Operating Temperature
Thank you very much guys. This was something of a "fishing expedition" of my own creation (never do that again) and I just wanted some backup to leave the engine alone. No sense looking for improvements on an engine that is working very well.
Thanks again.
