Running too rich

Post by dreed » Sun Sep 17, 2017 3:11 pm

My KLC with Zenith carb. is running too rich. Does anyone know how many turns from fully closed is normal? I think I set mine at 2 1/2 turns several years ago, and it ran like crap today. Thanks in advance.

I had a KLC but I don't recall how far from seated the mixture was set, sorry. Just a note to double check your ignition circuit; points, coil, cap, rotor, wires and plugs as a weak spark can exacerbate rich running and definitely make it run like crap (been there).

The instructions that come with a K2076 kit for carbs on a MCL recommend: "Turn idle needle in lightly against its seat, than back out needle 1 - 1/4 turns as a preliminary adjustment."

I adjusted mine at 2 - 1/2 turns on my W's the first time. Good thing I did not through out the instructions. :D

Update. I took the boat to my mechanic and explained the symptoms. He immediately took the distributer cap off and discovered the red wire to the Pertronix electrical ignition was rubbing against the rotating magnet holder. It was interfering with the advance. Suggest when installing electronic ignition you tape the wires to the inside up the distributer base so it they cant rub up against any rotating pieces. I will know more and post an update in the future.

Ah ha! A high percentage of fuel/carb problems are really ignition.

Update. Scrapped the Pertronics and went back to points.

Good Move.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.
