MCL Flywheel Timing Mark

Post by Bilge Rat » Tue Mar 13, 2018 8:40 am

Rebuilding a 1957 MCL. This one has the timing pointer and therefore should have a corresponding mark on the flywheel for setting the timing as per the user manual. The flywheel that came with the engine is one for an M series engine but I cannot find a timing dimple mark or other mark on it. Any idea what the mark should look like?

I know that on the older engines, timing is set under full load speed on the water by ear but I'm thinking the factory timing mark would be better.

the timing mark on the MCL is a small dimple that looks like it was done with a drill bit.
are you sure you have the correct flywheel? the MCL wheel is flat with no step in it like the other M series engines.

That may be the problem, I cannot be certain that this is the correct flywheel. Picture posted.

This one was colored to find it easier. That's the correct flywheel. Older ones do not have the dot.

Thank you Jim, I figured the mark should be on the rim near the ring gear teeth and not on the face. Looks like I have the wrong flywheel. I'll be contacting you.
