MCL Dual Carb Fuel Lines

Post by Bilge Rat » Mon Nov 19, 2018 4:05 pm

Moving along with my MCL rebuild and as happens a lot, not all of the original external parts came with the engine. I'm looking for help with the hard fuel lines from the fuel pump to the tee fitting and from the tee to each carb. The female fittings on the fuel pump and carb banjo bolts are 1/4" NPT. I know that the original fuel lines were an inverted compression with a compression tee and fittings, possibly no longer available. I've already added a spin-on oil filter and re-plumbed the oil lines and crankcase ventilation line with 3/8" ID copper tubing and swageloc industrial compression fittings.

I'm thinking that 5/16" OD steel line would be the minimum for the fuel pump to carbs fuel lines, is this correct?

Am I better served finding inverted flare lines and fittings similar to brake lines or building my own? I can make my own but would have to buy a double flaring tool. Bending the lines is within my scope as I have the tooling I used to bend the oil lines and it does multiple tube sizes.

Thank you

Steel line will rust.

Make new lines in 5/16 copper using brass DOT compression fittings.

If you want to go the inverted flair route, you can rent (for free) the tool at Autozone or Advanced Automotive, for brake lines

Thank you all. Looks like I'll make my own lines and use stainless steel 5/16".

Are you avoiding copper for a reason? :?

Not really. The re-plumbed oil lines are copper, the suction side of the fuel pump is copper, the crankcase breather circuit piping is copper. It's just more economical to purchase a shorter length of 5/16" stainless steel for these small pieces rather than a roll of soft bendable copper.
