pulling transmission gear off a 283 R15 crankshaft

Post by rslingerland » Sun Nov 22, 2015 8:47 pm

Dear Folks,
My mechanic is not able to pull the transmission gear and timing sprocket off the crankshaft of a 1962 283 R15 from a 27 ft Sea Skiff. In the attached photo you can see the gear and sprocket at the top. He has asked me to inquire from you all if there is a trick to this--a hidden key perhaps? ANy thoughts appreciated.
Thanks,
R Slingerland
PS. The two pistons frozen in place with rust are another nasty surprise, but solvable.

probably need a bigger 3 jaw puller and a little heat.
or you need to pull the crankshaft and use a bearing splitter in a hydraulic press and a little heat.

Kroil. Use it for the gear and those rusted pistons. Amazing stuff. Soak it and come back the next day and it could pop right off.

First off try removing just the trans. gear first. Second you can use some heat but most people use to much heat which can damage the gear. The best way to remove it is with the factory tool. Second way is to remove the crank and put it in a press and remove it. This is the way I highly recommend that you do it. Since its probably going to the machine shop to rebuild it just leave it on there and let them remove it. Tell them to use a press. I actually had a machine shop cut one off. Needless to say that was the first and last time I used them.

Check with the engine builder, you may not have to remove it unless it is shot. I did a 1960 CC 283 and left mine on the crankshaft.

You have to remove it to replace the timing gear.

You are probably dealing with too tight an interference fit. If that is so, no amount of lube is going to make any difference. The gear will have to be set up in a press and evenly heated to around 200-250 deg. F. It won't take much to reach that range. Heat sticks should be used to test temperature. Too much heat may affect change in the strength of the gear. For a diameter the size of a SB crank, interference going back on should be between .0005"-.001", no burrs, good key fit, and lubricated with light oil. Any machine shop worth their salt can work this out. CQ
