Repowering a 1956 Continental

Post by joesoboti » Sun Aug 07, 2016 8:04 pm

I am thinking of repowering my Continental with a 287 or something like it. Does anyone have Any thoughts or previous experiences to share?

What is the current engine? If it is a 6 Cyl., you will need a full set up, such as a 283F. A 283 would move that boat pretty well with a Factory HP of 185. All of the marine specific parts such as the exhaust manifolds, water pumps, etc will fit on a 350 as well and look the same as the blocks were all virtually the same on the outside. You can sometimes find a good running donor engine out there, but much of what is being sold on eBay and places like that came out of a running boat, but may be ready for a rebuild. Without proper documentation, I would expect to rebuild anything you buy just so you don't get surprised. My brother in law just bought a nice, running 283 complete with transmission and all necessary parts for conversion from a K to the V8. He paid in the neighborhood of $3500-4000 for the setup. You can find them cheaper, but can't trust that they will not need rebuilding.

The F series is a flywheel aft motor. You want the earlier 283 flywheel forward motor.
