Ceiling Board Stain Color for 1941 Barrel Back
Do you use the same color stain for the ceiling boards as you do the hull for a 1941 17' Barrel Back? The ones on my boat are very dark. I am refinishing the whole boat I am looking to know what color they are "suppose" to be? Thank you.

Should match topside and deck mahogany stain.

Re: Ceiling Board Stain Color for 1941 Barrel Back
I'm not totally convinced they were all the same mahogany stain. I have a barrel back in the shop that I know had very little work done on it and very original, the ceiling boards are walnut color the same as the covering boards, very interesting as I think they are original. I'm not sure if they came that way from the factory or if they just look like that from age. I see nothing on the hull card that says they stained them different and also looked over the O'Mara files and find nothing in there either.

Very interesting indeed. Anything special on Hull card? Have you had the ceilings off to look at the back side for any additional support evidence. I've seen finish get very dark over time but it would be a hoot if your example turns out to be original. That would suggest that CC did mix things up a bit.

Re: Ceiling Board Stain Color for 1941 Barrel Back
Hello - That you for the replies. First off I am a novice, so maybe this is just the way it's suppose to be. But since I am doing a complete "refresh" of the boat I want to make sure I do as much right as I can.
1. Just to get you up to date. Attached picture of the boat last week, upside down, just completed total rebuild of bottom, everything below water line is new, keel, frames, chines....
2. Also attached a picture of after I turned it back over, shows topsides still varnished.
3. Picture of boat after the weekend. Varnish removed & started washing out the stain. Many questions here.
a. Do I wash out as much stain as I can then start sanding to get the wood to a uniform color?
4. 2 pictures of the ceiling boards, front (with varnish removed) & back. Thoughts? My thoughts are they look a lot darker then the hulls of "restored" barrel backs that I have seen.
I was told to use the Pettit Dark Mahogany Stain on the hull.
Thank you for helping me out.

Re: Ceiling Board Stain Color for 1941 Barrel Back
I am not sure how "pure" you are trying to make your boat. They didnt use petit on pre war boats. NW classic boats had the pre war stain chemically analyzed and had it reproduced.
I would be very surprised if the ceiling boards were a different stain. I have never heard of that before. (I guess anything is possible but i think we would need some kind of documentation before saying it was so. the old stain can get awfully dark, depending on how it has been stored since new.) anyway looks like you are doing a great job.

The O'Mara files is a set of documents that show everything that was purchased for some of the models built at Chris Craft. Attached is a page the shows the flooring for the 1941 Custom, what type , size screws and how many they used. I gives us restores that truly care about putting these boats back together just as the factory delivered them something to go by. I've only seen them for certain models but believe there was something like this for every model sold.

Just FYI. NW classic boats said they use Interlux Red Mahogany stain for the ceiling boards & hull. The gentleman I spoke to was very nice to talk with & took time to discuss their process.
