1959 17' CC Sportsman Light Colored Wood Surround

Post by agmgtd » Mon Sep 03, 2018 2:55 pm

My deck took quite a bid of abuse (UV, Salt Water) last summer and I am in the process of refinishing the bad spots. The 1959 model of the Sportsman had a light colored forward king plank, cockpit surround, and aft deck, resulting in what I would best describe as a blondish grained wood.

I have been wrestling with the best way to renew the look (blending it into the old). Can anyone provide a fairly detailed procedure for this renewal process? Any well informed advice would be very appreciated.

Post photos. One issue is you might redo it so well, it makes the rest of the boat off. But photos will help and then folks can chime in and help see what the issue is. Stained wood is tough, dull finish easy.

See below the orange Attachments after you hit reply, Click that. it will ask to upload image or something like that. You may need to say something, and generally large images are rejected to help server space and page loading time. So try under 1 mg files. 1500 PX max. No need for anything larger anyway. Hope this helps. Matt

Thank you again - I am attaching a jpg photo. The size of the file is critical and after several down grading of the resolution I was successful.

Sorry I'm gonna be blunt  but really, there's not a lot you can do once a finish has been compromised to improve it's looks much short of a refinish. I have in the past did topcoats to stabilize, until I got to a restoration.
If there are weathered parts on the blond without any finish at all, you might try to bleach those parts out. It's easier on stained parts where you can do some spot staining then varnish over.
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

I’d tape off around the blond area. Strip, sand, stain, revarnish. The yellow looks a bit odd? Is that the right shade for your boat.

Oh! Egh, ugh, OUCH, ya. Strip, bleach, stain and varnish. Do it right and will want to rub your body all over it. YA, I said it. HA. Its gonna be winter. You can do it. And it will make the boat look like a bazillion bucks for very little

Thank you all for your thoughts. In terms of the color this is how I bought the boat so I cannot speak to the authenticity of the color, but it would be nice to reproduce it. I spoke to the previous owner and he is unfamiliar with the color process per se, and the restorer is no longer in business. On the other hand if I take it down to bare wood, bleach etc. the question becomes what color do I end up with and does it require staining, and if so what color (manufacture) stain.

I am reasonably familiar with refinishing and varnishing having messed around in boats for 70 years, but my bleaching experience has been limited to removing stains, and then the wood is stained as required to match the "original" wood. While in this case we are seeking a totally different color from the native wood (mahogany).

Rather than this back and forth requiring drawn out E-mail dialogue if someone would be willing to provide me with phone contact information, we can accelerate the process. I believe the site has a mechanism to provide "secure" direct communication. Otherwise my E-mail address is [email protected]. And armed with this we can exchange more sensitive personal information.

Thank you all for your patience and putting up with my step by step back and forth. There is only so much wood left to be sanded so I want to minimize the number of times I prep the wood! It would be nice to leave enough meat so as not to have to replace plugs.

Thanks, i understand, but the site is also here for others to ease drop and add to the chain. This way you get the collective experience of the crew. There are some great restorers that will jump in here that know the specific color. Its just a simple stain. The bleaching part is to create an even look. Not sure where you live, but if it helps we can guide you to a restorer in your area that can do this if you like.
