Penetrol

Post by 57 chris » Tue Jun 07, 2011 8:30 pm

Has anyone used Penetrol in Polyurethane? I've used it before in oil base paints and varnish but never polyurethane. Just wondered if it works with that too.

I would contact the manufacturer. I have used Penetrol with varnish and contacted them for advice a few years back. That being said, I talked to both a west coast and east coast representative and got two different answers.

Craig,

I have used Penetrol with Interlux polyurethane paints and had no problems with it. Good luck.

I wonder if polyurethane paint is the same or different than clear polyurethane.

I just started using it with Bristol finish polyurethane and it seems to help it flow better. I have not noticed any difference in the finish.

I've never tried it with poly before but I'm trying to get a coat on a project and the weather here has been just oppressively hot and humid and it's not behaving properly.

Just an update for those who are interested,
I sent an information request to Minwax regarding the use of Penetrol.
Never got a reply so I went ahead and tried the penetrol in the polyurethane and it worked fine. It did not appear to change the color of the finish but who knows about long term, all I can tell you is it works as well with the poly as with other oil based finishes.

Poly Finishes

Post by evansjw44 » Sun Jun 26, 2011 8:07 am

I have avoided using polyurathane finishes. I tried poly varnish once and it cracked at every plank joint. I stick to alkyd finishes. As Interlux drops the alkyd colors I have had to have them mixed locally. But I do use Penetrol, mostly in color finished, rarely in varnish. I use an old style varnish, Benjamin Moore Impervo 440.
