Teak Treatment?

Post by dhnelson » Tue Aug 16, 2011 12:42 pm

I have not owned a boat with teak for 20 years. What is the new/best state of the art treatment?

I love the Starbrite Cleaners, but once it's clean and to keep it looking nice I won't use anything but Sikkens <sp> Done RIGHT it holds up well and looks great.

Just purchased my first Chris, 1959 conqueror - It's going to be an interesting ride!

Once you get the teak cleaned (acid washed) there is nothing better than Sikkens Cetol for keeping the teak properly oiled.

Are they teak decks or just hand rails and toe rails? I have done a lot of each over the years and love the Starbrite cleaner and Teka A and B. If it is a deck then clean it and leave it. Teak is a natural none skid surface when wet and if you put oil on any teak it is a dirt attractant. If you coat them with varnish or another sealing product its a skating rink. Sikkens is a great product that has gotten better over the years I would stay away from cetol it tends to get orange and you loose the beauty of the wood. If it is hand rails and toe rails I love cleaning them, sanding them and then a good UV varnish, nothing will look better. With varnish you will have to coat them 5 or 6 times the first year then 2 to 3 coats every year after for a couple years. Then you have a good build up that will last a few years depending where you live.
