Mahogany Colored Paint?

Post by jbyers » Mon May 02, 2016 9:39 am

I am trying to decide on a paint color for my 58 plywood Cavalier. I have it pretty much stripped down to the wood, but because of the multiple old patches it won't be possible to go back with stain as I had hoped for.

I am trying to find a marine paint that is mahogany colored but so far I can not find any.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Here's a thought. My wife wanted to replace our perfectly good aluminum garage doors with wooden ones. I wasn't footing that bill, but I did inquire with a painter who did faux wood finishes. Didn't go that route either, but you might consider it. Would probably require some type of base coat, then a clear coat on top for protection.

Pettit does make a color called Brightwork Brown in Easypoxy. Don't know what it looks like. Never used it.

Years ago when I first finished the bottom of the SeaSkiff I wanted a copper color but did not want an anti-fouling product. Unable to find what I was looking for I contacted Kirby's Paint Co. in New Bedford, Mass.
They make from scratch old fashioned linseed oil base enamel paint just like grandpa used to use. Unmolested by the EPA "good stuff" paint that flows well, stays on and looks like a mirror.
I spoke with the owner of the company himself George Kirby Jr. (I love it when the owner answers his own phone)!and told him my needs.
Well Kirby Paint co. mixed a color for me that looks like a shiny new penny and it doesn't tarnish! LOL.
They even saved the color recipe and named it after me.
I would definitely contact them about your wish for a mahogany color paint.

now I am not suggesting you DO this....but on cruisers I have seen folks use (me being one) Benjamin Moore Floor and Deck Enamel in "Rich Brown".....now this is still available in some locations in the oil base that you would want....but only in quarts...but that is a lot really. I used it on baseboards in the cockpit and even on the mahog cockpit rails....hold up great....looks " brown ".....???? Like everything else on a "user cruiser".....this stuff looks fine .....at a distance....boat length or more!

Thanks guys........ all good suggestions. I just keep replacing rotted wood. No telling where it might end, but I made good progress over the three day weekend.
