1932 Chris Craft Bilge and bottom paint

Post by cjel » Tue Jun 14, 2016 11:03 am

It appears Sandusky Grey bilge paint is a good bilge color, although did this year come with a lite grey as offered by Sandusky? Other suggestions?
I have Fiberglass coated bottom so do not need an expensive antifouling paint. IS copper bronze the correct color? I have seen some with a dark red , dark green, or the copper bronze... suggestions?
Thanks, Cjel

First there is not much information to go on here other than the year of your boat. What model is it? The hull card is your best source for this info, but the Mariners Museum is closed for the next year.

I would expect the Mahogany bilge paint would be more likely for your boat. Sandusky # 9605.

Looking in the Essential Guide, most of your era boats claim "no reliable data" when it comes to bottom paint color.

I don't understand the statement about not needing anti-fouling paint because you have a glassed bottom. I need anti-fouling paint on my glass boat, so I don't know how that changes anything. :?

Good luck!

I do not know if the use of gray bilge paint in 1932 was universal (for CC) but I am pretty sure it was used on some. I would have to dig to confirm but I have some factory photos of some 1932 models clearly showing gray. I'm sure someone will confirm or refute, but a little more research might prove one way or the other. Let us know what model you have, it will help.

Like cjel said we need more information. I am assuming this is a runabout and not a cruiser. There was 2 different colors of grey that I have seen in the early 1930's. One is a bit darker then the other. I know in 1929 it was a lighter grey and the boat I did that was a 1931 was a darker gray. I would think it is the darker grey color.

Gray was standard in all C-C's until mid-1934 when they switched to red in the smaller boats. They went back to gray briefly at the end of 1939 (I have a Kirby mix for that). As far as the bottom color, what model is your boat? Red or bronze depending on the model in '32.

My 1932 is a Model 300. I just received Sandusky gray bilge paint, seems to dark for what is on my boat that is likely original color, although I have not tested it on the boat. Bottom paint replies suggest bottom paint correct color is copper bronze or red? Suggestion for a source for that?

Thanks for all the replies!!!

I use Pettit 1933 (Cooper/Bronze) on Yorktown. I have been told that it is discontinued but have not verified that. My brother was able to walk into Hamilton Marine two weeks ago and buy 3 quarts off the shelf. May be NOS, who knows. :D

I have a friend who owns a boat yard who was able to get his Pettit rep to develop a mixture for him for the Cooper/Bronze color in their Vivid line. May want to check into that.

Model 300 was bright red enamel with black 1" boot top. I like Kirbys #24 but any will work.

Find a good sample of your bilge paint and send it to George Kirby to match.

Troy, quit the 1933 and go to 1959 or Interlux Y999, life will be much easier. We have had three quarts of 1933 on the shelf for decades.

Thanks Brian! That is good to know. :D

Pettit 1959 Technical Bulletin says for fresh water only. That would be fine for Yorktown, but not some of the other boats. You may have found a buyer for your 1933.
