What is this GAS CAP from

Post by DennyDowning » Wed Aug 19, 2015 3:22 pm

When I bought the 1929 Chris Craft CADET many years ago she came with a nice gas cap I assumed was original.
I have since found a Dog Bone cap which says Crhis Craft on it - very nice.
So I am using it.
The old cap was in being rechromed when I got the Dog Bone cap.
So the original cap I have is just sitting on the shelf looking pretty.
I am wondering if anyone might know what it is from and perhaps I could get it to a person who needs one like this.

Don't recognize this gas cap. It's NOT Chris-Craft, Dodge, Gar Wood or Hacker.

Could also be a radiator or oil tank cap.

Okay, probably automotive.
Were radiator and oil caps vented?
Well, probably not relavent to our forum then.
I suppose the vent hole could have been added later.....

A brief follow up here; if interested.
Still unsure where this gas cap belongs but found one with the exact top profile.
It has external threads instead of internal; but the profile is identical.
It was listed on a "pre-war car sight" and the gas cap is from a "1911 Overland - Marion".
Never heard of that one........

Thanks for looking.
I guess in the 30's if a guy splashed the original fuel cap a 1911 replacement would likely be availabel and work.

cool. Overland was ultimately purchased by Willys, to be come Willys overland, and i guess that led to the willys jeep, etc. interesting. it is a pretty cap whatever it is.

Thanks !
Another avenue to persue.

I have talked to some old car guys and they pointed out the chain hook on the cap.
Said cars did not need that so it is likely from a boat - or fire extinguisher?
They pointed at the vent hole as well indicating a boat.
I sent them the picture of the original print forwarded me from a gentalman in Belgium for the overland cap.

So still looking,

Could it be Italian or Swiss?

Still Looking......
I found more pictures of a 1913 Overland Speedster.
If you look real close it looks like the same cap - not good enough picture though.

I suppose this may not be relevant to our club except I read that the cap was used on speedboats and runabouts.
So I will keep looking.
Interesting anyway!

1913 Overland Speedster.....
Same Profile Cap - still think the cap is from a boat; but, have learned the cap was also used for the oil and radiator cap on various automobiles.

I know very little about cars, but would a radiator cap be vented? Possibly before the advent of overflows?
