Bending Exhaust Pipes

Post by macaluso » Sat Sep 22, 2018 4:46 pm

After reinstalling the engines for the restoration, we find that the old copper exhaust pipes don't fit and will have to be bent slightly. Has anyone had to bend a 2.5 to 3 in copper pipe. The local muffler shop was not interested in getting involved. We can cut and solder the pipes but I would prefer to just bend them a little and be done with it. I have read that a possibility is to pack them with sand, heat the pipe and then bend while they are hot. The sand keeps them from kinking and collapsing. Sounds good but I have never tried this. Any comments?

Bob,
Is the bend where it goes to the engine the issue? There are two elbows that look identical but have slightly different angles. 1643 and 5070. Yours takes the 1643
