I'm getting ready to install a new bottom on my 1946 Garwood Ensign and wonder if 316 stainless fasteners are appropriate. Don Danenberg states in his restoration book that stainless fasteners used below the waterline are not recommended since, being unexposed to oxygen, they will lose their passivity and revert to active which subjects them to corrosion. Yet the restoration company on the ACBS video on traditional 5200 bottom replacement uses Sharx 316 stainless fasteners. These are attractive as they have great holding capacity and are far less expensive than silicon bronze. What is the general consensus on this?

When you take into account the time and money it takes to do the job the cost of bronze fasteners is a small percentage of the total job. They will far out last stainless. When you go to sell the boat I think stainless in the bottom will seriously impact the price you get.

There not sealed off from the air.

My shafts have been underwater for years. They are easier to replace however than screws.

Thanks for all the replies. I agree with the consensus and have ordered silicon bronze fasteners for the bottom.
