Hi All, I finally found a windshield for the 1937 Chris Craft and would like to ask for tips on a good way to straighten out the bent pivot post?

Thanks, steve

I suggest you consult a company that specializes in straightening. They have experience in straightening the various metals as well as the jigs required to hold the parts during the straightening process. I would ask them how much experience they have with brass castings. Good Luck!

I tried to straighten out this original cast bronze fairlead. Heating it slowly. Well one crack turned to 4 then I silver soldered the 4 cracks and 3 more appeared and so on. I'm looking to replace it now due to the fact it has lost it's structural integrity. Good luck

I am not speaking from experience. I have never tried to straighten a cast brass piece. However I have been very happy With brass Castings.

Perhaps if you're straightening efforts fail you can have a casting made of the peace after you cut and reassemble it to make it into a mold.

Slight bends or mis- alignments can be corrected, but this one looks pretty extreme. Kiitos has the right idea. Usually a severe bend is a one way trip, though. CQ

If this really was brass it would probably be soft enough to take a cold bend. However, this is bronze which is an alloy of brass and is much stronger and therefore tougher and prone to cracking. Kiitos is right, go to an expert and see what they can do. I strongly suggest you do not try to straighten it yourself. Do you have a local blacksmith?

I would recommend Bud Brackett at Maine Classic Marine Hardware. 207-247-6862. I think.

Makes one wonder how it became so bent in the first place and didn't crack. Suppose it could have been dropped.

I would guess that there are numerous micro cracks after such a damaging incident. This is why it is important to see a real metal expert. I mentioned blacksmiths earlier and Im serious, many of them are very wise to these types of problems.
