Our 1970 Connie project has the original metal fresh water tank. Should we consider replacing this with a modern tank for better water quality? Now is the time to address this...

Yes. Cannot think of water to be "fresh" in a 45 year old metal tank , not if You intend to use it for drinking water. I'll go for a new plastic tank with a man hole for inspection and cleaning.

Not sure what metal was used in 1970, but I know the fresh water tank in my 1966 Lyman was galvanized with zinc as a component of the galvanizing. It also has very nice welds and some solder at seams and quite possibly some lead is in those. I still use this tank, but only for hand washing in the galley sink, I do not use it for drinking or ice and there's no shower on board.

If you are using it for other than hand washing, I think you should update it with a modern alternative. Pleasure boating should not be hazardous to your health.

BTW, I enjoyed your restoration pics of the Sportsman. My first restoration project was the same boat, a 1955 CC-17-2061. Brought back a lot of memories seeing the same steps I took.
