Was the original hull side gold colored logo

Chris Craft
- Delux-

A decal or gold leaf ?

If a decal, where can I buy it

If gold leaf, where can I get a template?

Thanks

Prewar U Hullside logo

Gene, I believe they were hand painted in either gold or silver leaf, your preference. As for the template you might try Russ Arrands at the Cadillac Boat Shop. He has restored a couple prewar 22' utilities, one that is his personal boat. I'm sure he could point you in the right direction.

I would also check into Aluminum leaf. The silver tarnished and this was right before the war. Silver would have been at a premium. The reason people think these were gold is because varnish would yellow them. I did silver by mistake at it turned green! OUCH!It may also depend on the model. Also check and see if the outline is mentioned on your hull card. Jesus , I dont want to know this stuff. Please.. My brain hurts from this stuff

Thanks Guys - I remember researching this when I first got the boat and yes, it was hand painted, and yes gold leaf - the aluminum was a little earlier, as I recall.

The photos that come in the hull card packet for the boat from the mariners museum show the " Chris Craft Utility " on the sides very nicely.

Gene,

It is supposed to be aluminum leaf outlined in black or blue for that particular boat. It should say "Utility" underneath it too. Gold leaf cost extra and would have been on the hull card (very few done this way from the factory).

Perfect timing! Would black, blue or another color be correct for the 18' as well?

Jim,

Not sure about the 18'U. I only have notes on the 22'. If it has a blue bottom and blue upholstery like the 22' it would stand to reason it could have been blue. Aside from that, black was the default.
